About FREEDOM
Chris Pape began painting graffiti on New York subways in 1974 with the name GEN-2, his early career lasted only two years and was derailed when he entered high school. He returned to writing in 1979 with a new name -FREEDOM. He left the trains in 1981 when he discovered he could paint figuratively with spraypaint.  From 1980 to 1996 he painted over 60 large scale murals in an abandoned tunnel - some as large as a New York City block, the tunnel would later become known as "The Freedom Tunnel ".  During this time he also chronicled the lives of the homeless beneaththe city streets in drawings and paintings that would appear in the book "The Mole People". After leaving the tunnel works he began a career as a fine artist, selling to collectors around the world. His interest in graffiti shows no bounds and he is considered to be one of the leading archivist's of the New York subway graffiti movement. He is currently working on a book on the history of  subway graffiti as well as his second documentary on the subject. His two current book projects are due out in 2010.
